Here’s an idea I’ve used for many, many years.

At my printing firm, we had a payday every two weeks. I would always personally distribute the paychecks to every employee. As a way of reminding them who it was that really provided their paycheck, I designed the very unique payroll envelope shown above.

Our payroll envelope featured colorful graphics which read: “Your paycheck — brought to you by our customers.” Payday is always a popular time at any company, and I used the opportunity to remind my coworkers that we always need to take really good care of our customers, so they in turn will continue to take care of us.

This unique payroll envelope is a powerful “in-house” marketing tool to help connect your employees to your customers. It doesn’t cost much and is easy to produce.

Oh, by the way, sometimes a customer would be in our lobby when I was distributing paychecks. When that happened, I always made a point to walk by the customer, say hi, shake their hand, and say, “I was just passing out paychecks. Thank you for making this possible.” Then I’d show the customer our payroll envelope. It always made a big impression, and customers always had enthusiastic comments about it. Over the years, two of them even ordered the same payroll envelopes for their company!
